Sustainability: The Arguments for Buying Timeless Jeans

Why Buying Second-Hand Jeans is Better for the Environment:

The denim industry, valued at $63.5 billion globally in 2020, poses significant environmental challenges. The impact is undeniable from consuming a staggering 790 gallons (around 3,780 litres) of water for a single pair of jeans to releasing about 33.4 kg of CO2 throughout its lifecycle. The industry's heavy use of harmful chemicals, such as synthetic indigo dye and finishing agents containing formaldehyde, further compounds environmental concerns.

1. Water Conservation:

Denim production is notorious for its water-intensive processes. A single pair of jeans requires up to 790 gallons (around 3,780 litres) of water during its supply chain—from growing cotton to fabric processing. By choosing second-hand jeans, consumers directly reduce the demand for new denim production, conserving precious water resources.

2. Reduced Carbon Footprint:

Each pair of jeans carries a significant carbon footprint, with approximately 33.4 kg of CO2 released throughout its lifecycle. Manufacturing emissions, estimated at 16.2 kg CO2 per pair, are akin to flying a plane around the globe 2,372 times or a petrol car travelling more than 21 billion miles. Opting for pre-loved denim extends the life of these garments, avoiding the need for new production and associated emissions.

3. Mitigating Chemical Usage:

Denim production involves various harmful chemicals, including pesticides, fertilisers, dyes, and finishing agents. Synthetic indigo dye, for instance, is toxic and persists in the environment. Choosing second-hand jeans supports a market that doesn't contribute to the ongoing demand for these hazardous substances.

4. Extending the Lifespan:

The durability of denim is well-known, and second-hand jeans often retain their quality. By purchasing gently used denim, consumers invest in garments likely to last longer in their wardrobe. This longevity reduces the need for frequent replacements and lessens the demand for new denim production.

5. Supporting Circular Fashion:

Second-hand jeans exemplify the principles of circular fashion—a system promoting the reuse, recycling, and longevity of garments. When buying pre-loved denim, individuals actively participate in extending the life cycle of these products. This reduces the amount of clothing ending up in landfills, where textiles contribute to environmental degradation.

6. Economic and Ethical Considerations:

Beyond the environmental benefits, purchasing second-hand jeans often comes with a more accessible price tag. It offers an opportunity to enjoy quality denim without the premium associated with new, designer pieces. Supporting the second-hand market also encourages a shift towards a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry.

In an increasingly aware of environmental impact, choosing second-hand jeans is a clear step towards sustainability. By embracing pre-loved denim, individuals make a statement about their commitment to the planet and contribute to a more circular and conscious fashion landscape.

We understand that over the past few decades, false sustainability claims have undermined consumers' trust in companies' promises. Below, we have attached links to every article used in our research for this page so you can double-check our research. We are not claiming to be a perfectly sustainable company; we wish to point out the positive impact on the environment by making the simple swap of buying a second-hand pair of jeans rather than a brand-new pair.
